I had a friend who was still nursing her daughter after starting kindergarten
about age 51/2 who had the experience of her child actually trying to
"blackmail" her by threatening " If you don't ....(can't remember the
stipulation- something like buy me a new bike) , I will tell my teacher you
still nurse me".
In another family, which I know has been reported numerous times with no
action by CPS, the mother dissapeared for 3 days (probably on a drinking/drug
binge as in the past) last week leaving her 6 week old in the care of a 10
year old sister- but of course the 10 yr old was able to give appropriate
formula feeds so why intervene??
I have used discussions on the nursing 6 yr old ( which most people think is
just insane) to jump start many lively conversations that include failure
rates with new mothers, what is a biologically normal weaning age vs a
culturally accepted one, and many other breastfeeding topics that normally
wouldn't come up. Very similar to the crazy election encouraging an increase
in political knowledge.
