<One result is in, though: she has an HCG of 5.4. Her GP feels that's too
low to block lactogenesis II. Anyone here have any additional thoughts?
(I'm out of my depth there.) She's going to take a home pregnancy test,
just out of curiosity. >

Hi Diane,
home pregnancy tests are pretty accurate and will pick up very low levels of
HCG and indicate a "positive" result.
If we need to work out if someone has had a miscarriage, say, we would not
rely on urine tests, but do serial quantitative HCGs. If someone has a
continuing pregnancy the HCG levels quickly go up to the 1,000s and stay
there. So, a result less than 10 is pretty low (I'm presuming the same units
are being measured as here). I don't have any experience of checking HCGs in
the postpartum period, so can't say if the HCG should actually be 0 by now.
