About September 5 or 6 I posted about a mother who got hives when
breastfeeding (or had w/ her first child) -- to the point that at three weeks
with her throat closing up, she went to the ER and got an epinephrine
injection and quit breastfeeding. This would start at one week after
delivery.

Fast forward: I posted to y'all, and Catherine Watson Genna suggested mom
going on a low dose of liquid Benadryl -- that is, half the normal dose which
would be about 12.5 mg, every 4 to 6 hours around the clock to keep the
histamine levels at bay.

When I called her exactly one week post birth (9/11), no hives -- all was
going well. She called me today, and said that the day after we talked, she
started getting slightly itchy with a very few bumps. She immediately
started on the Benadryl ATC, and she's been fine. She has a little bit of
itchiness occasionally w/ a few red bumps, but even those seem to be less and
less. She's taking the Benadryl about every 5 hours. Baby is now just over
two weeks old. Mom is ecstatic!!! We never figured out what caused the
hives, but this regimine is working well for her.

I suggested that when she was getting no more hives or itchiness at all that
she slowly decrease the number of times she's taking the Benadryl -- from
four times a day to three to two, and then off.

So, thanks to all of you who responded, and a special thanks to Catherine for
providing a terrific, easy, safe, and efficacious solution!!
