Hi Nikki,
The practicalities of relactation when a mother is primarily pumping (as
opposed to having a baby suckling) are that sustaining pumping very
frequently for more than a short time is hard, though you are right it would
probably be better. However, certainly it can work short term and I know
women who have "gone to bed with the pump" in order to facilitate
this.....more easily achieved in cases of pre-placement for adoption and no
mother wants or should be encouraged to spend more time with the pump than
her baby!
