Information on HMF (Human milk fortifier) is not difficult to find, and
has been discussed several times on this list since I joined it.

I found a study of interest at
<http://www.kfshrc.edu.sa/annals/215_216/01-048.htm> from 2001. In a
study of 100 VLBW infants, randomly assigned to human milk with or
without fortifier, they found the fortified group had shorter hospital
stays and less morbidity than the unfortified group. There was no
difference in rates of NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis) in the two groups.

All infants were fed their own mother's milk. If their mothers did not
provide enough milk for the day, formula was added on that day. Babies
who got more than 15% of their calories from formula for more than two
days were excluded from the study.
