As usual this is an interesting discussion. I posted in a previous
discussion that I was one of the "5%" many years ago. I feel I must add a
couple of comments.
1. The number needs to be researched if it is important. It will be
difficult as milk production is influenced by many things. I believe we do
not have all the information on effects of modern medicine's approach to
labor. I think the reason for not liking the number is because we want to
believe it is not a problem.
2. What is important is that we understand there are underfed babies for a
variety of reasons and we need to pick them up as early as possible. We have
come a long way since I was advised repeatedly to just go to bed with my
baby. He would have died if that was all I did!
3. Third, being unable to "make enough milk" is not the same as being able
to breastfeed. I spent years of my life breastfeeding and supplementing with
each feeding. What I see is that women are so disappointed and sometimes
actually hate their breasts for "failing them" that they do not often choose
this option. However, it is a good one. At ILCA someone mentioned a letter
to the editor of the JHL from years back about bottlefeeding as a
breastfeeding mother. I plan to look this up, but this is what I recommend
to all moms who are not breastfeeding for any reason.
4. I really loved the 10 steps presentation the last day of ILCA. The
speaker suggested adding 2 more steps. The 11th had to do with the code and
offering free formula. The 12th had to do with embracing and supporting
non-breastfeeding mothers rather than judging them. We need to support
mothering no matter what choices she might have made. This will give us the
attitude to help the mom who gives up because of insufficient milk, sore
nipples, or whatever.
