We also tell moms to wake babies in the first week every 2 - 3 hours in the
day time for feeding and to watch for hunger cues. We tell mom the IF baby
nurses every 2-3 I the day time then a 4-5 hours stretch AT NIGHT is ok for
baby to sleep. We also emphasize that baby needs a minimum of 8- 10 feeds in
24 and that they may nurse every hour for 3 hours then sleep a longer
period, babies do their own thing, but if they don't wake up mom needs to
wake them up.

It is quite amazing how the baby of an unmediated birth is so much more
alert and awake and wanting to nurse, just had a delivery yesterday
afternoon and the mom and grandma both commented on how awake and alert the
baby was and calm and nursing well. I explained to them this is a result of
no pain med on the moms part, they were fascinated by this.... was a great
teaching opportunity.
