I read "Midwives" last year and liked it a lot.   This is a serious book,
not a sensational exploitation as I feared when I first heard about it.
It is very well-informed about the issues of lay midwives and homebirth.
Although the story is about a midwife who loses a patient due to possible
misjudgement (don't want to give the plot away) it is very positive about
the safety of homebirth in general.  The book is also well-written.  It
compares favorably to "Snow Falling on Cedars" in terms of the quality of
the writing and depth of characterization.
