At the hospital where I work (130-150 births/month, 20-30 percent C/S) the mums stay in recovery for 1/2 hour then the baby is put to the breast as soon as it wants it. Most women have an epidural, a spinal or combined, rarely a GA. Voltaren suppositories+panadeine forte are used for pain relief with epidural top ups for the first day or so.The baby is positioned in whatever position is comfortable, under arm or across the tummy, occasionally sidelying. The next day sitting in a chair is encouraged as the best position to be in to feed.
