Rosellina asked for suggestions on discussing breastfeeding with a
junior high class without embarrassing her daughter. It seems that
discussing breastfeeding as it might occur in their lives would be more
useful than a discussion of the Code.

Since this age group is squeamish about their developing bodies,
starting with a more general topic might be more comfortable. Perhaps
the idea of species-specific milk -- each mammal's milk specifically
geared to how those babies grow, e.g. rabbits' very concentrated milk so
can feed fast-growing babies and leave alone so as not to attract
predators; seals' very high-fat milk to lay down blubber; herd animals'
high mineral/protein so they can soon run with the herd. Then lead into
"what is unique about human beings" -- born very immature, open
digestive tract, incomplete immune system, fast-growing brain, and the
need for constant contact to learn about attachment and incredibly
complex social system (jr. high students know about that) -- and how
human milk, and its warm, easy delivery system are designed to answer
those needs.

You could also discuss it from the angle of good health practices --
that we know more now about how good breastfeeding is for mothers and
babies babies. As a public health matter, health professionals are
trying to get the word out, just as we talk to students about the
importance of not smoking, not taking drugs, eating right etc.

Maybe your daughter would be reassured if you brought her into the
process. If she can be the "expert" consultant on addressing a
school-age crowd, and help with the rehearsals and fine-tuning, she
might be easy with the fact that you will be both dignified and
interesting.

Good luck.
