Well, Karen, there is always the analogy of tears - even if we cry a lot, we
can always cry more. And the most obvious one - our kidneys are always
producing urine, so that even if we empty our bladders, there is still always
more there... And we do talk about emptying our bladders, but I don't think
we truly do any more than we empty our breasts. But, I don't talk about that
as the analogy with moms.

As long as we are clear on what "we" mean by emptying the breast, I don't
think we have to worry. I'm a bit reluctant to use softening of the breast,
because it implies there has to be fullness/firmness before we can bf,
otherwise the br is "empty" and the baby won't get anything. If a mom is
routinely bf every 2 hours or so, she may not notice fullness unless she
suddenly goes 2 1/2 or 3 hours.

The sink is a good one - and I think it is good for description in talking to
moms & professionals. Karen, if you don't mind, I might just borrow it.
But, it would be nice to have a good short term that was correct!

At least we won't be saying as the advertisement for a particular bottle
feeding system, "...and the bag collapses like a breast...." isn't that the
greatest mental picture of what is happening? When was the last time you saw
a breast collapse after the baby nursed?

Hugs,

Jan
