Gherkins are tiny pickled cucumbers.
The cucumbers used for dill pickles are much larger.  You can buy (or
make) them either whole, in spears or sliced.
I woudl assume - hope! - that this baby was given a whole pickle. They
tend to be quite firm and easy to hold.
