In reply to the question about central nurseries. We have a central
nursery in our facility where we deliver about 2000 a year. We have been
successful at significantly increasing rooming in and decreasing
supplementation in the past year with staff education about
supplementation. Staff members are also required to educate mothers about
the effects of supplementation on production and long term success of
breastfeeding. We have also changed the way that we instruct parents about
their nursery/rooming alternatives. Breastfeeding families are given two
options at night: keep the baby in the room with mom or send it to the
nursery where it will be brought back and forth to mom's room as hunger
cues or shown or at least every 3 hrs, whichever comes first. We strongly
advise against breastfeeding infants staying in the nursery all night.
Good luck.
