It should not be a problem. First and foremost, it is a service to the
clients. IMO a very important one, and it should be presented to admin like
that. There is some difference between for-profits vs non-profits, I believe
in collecting some taxes, but the pump company will help you with that. The
difference with a non-profit is that profits from services are re-invested
into the hospital. This is my understanding. So any profits that are made
can be reinvested in the overall maternity program, the lactation program,
hiring more LCs, providing education for staff, sending staff to
conferences, buying good bf books, video, any number of great things.
I am working to get one started at my non-profit hosp, as mothers have
nowhere nearby to purchase or rent good pumps. I find the use of Evenflow
and Gerber pumps to be rampant and universally panned by the users as
useless and ineffective. The mothers that do get and use a good pump
generally marvel at the difference. Today one such mother who went to the
next town to do a pump rental (baby w/ tongue-tie) stated "that was the best
$150 I have ever spent!" BTW her baby who had lost weight gained 8 oz in 2
days once following my corrective plan.
