2nd of two most interesting cases from Monday batch is this: Baby I saw as
a 28 hr newborn (at home within 6 hours of mother's discharge) is now a
bouncing almost 11-lbers (mother was concerned baby has gained too much:
nearly 5 lbs in 7 weeks). While checking him over, I discovered a
previously missed tongue tie when he cried. Classic heart-shaped tongue.
But this mother has NEVER comoplained of sore nipples, baby has always gone
on well and suckles well. MOther has COPIOUS milk supply.

When I mentioned that her baby had a tongue tie, she asked what to do about
it. I told her I knew an oral surgeon but as long as baby and she are doing
well, no need to do anything. (I did mention his inability to french kiss
later in life; we agreed--between fits of laughter--that HE could get it
clipped if he wished at that time.) More seriously, I did mention
occasional speech problems and what to do should that be noticed in years
hence and what to pay attention to should she have another baby who has
difficulty bf with tongue tie.

Just goes to show that non-crying babies can sometimes fool one, especailly
when mother's comfort level and issues do not point to such a (potential)
problem. It also was nice to see an obvious tongue-tie that has NOT created
difficulties. Once again, I am reminded that the range of severity of
elements is broad.

Also makes me wonder how frequently other cases are missed because of lack
of difficulty....
