Although I'm no pharmacist and this doesn't have much to do with BF but I
felt that I had to share what happened to my sister who was on lithium for
several years. She was once a very thin young lady. She now weighs over 350
lbs. An endrocinologist (sp?) told her that the lithium had replaced the
normal sodium in her body and had damaged ALL her endrocrine glands Thyroid
and pitutary especially thus contributing to the weight gain. Apparently an
effect of cronic toxicity.

Briggs, Yaffe and Freeman state that milk levels are 40-50per cent of
maternal serum concentration... the American Acc of Pediatrics considers
Lithium contraindicated (NOT compatiable) during breastfeeding because of
the potential for lithium induced toxicity in the nursing infant.
Not a great drug during pregnancy either.
