One thing I always try to do and find very rewarding personally when I see it happen is this: helping the mother fall in love with her baby. There are many approaches, techniques or whqatever you want to call them that contribute to this including, but not limited to:
1-Pointing out what is positive about her baby's actions, looks or whatever.
2-Helping her begin to interpret her baby''s signals.
3-Modeling positive interaction with the baby. This may including talking to the baby, asking the baby "What are you trying to tell us?" or apologizing to the baby if something we try seems to upset him/her.
None of this is a method or action in itself, but a general approach to whatever we do with/say to a mom.

Winnie
