I think babies are considered preterm until about age 2 years. In other words if you are supposed to do something -sit, stand, etc. by a certain age range, PT term babies get more weeks, depending on how early. By age 2 yrs. most have usually caught up in most areas of development. This baby would be roughly same as a newborn, but this baby has had lots of different experiences than being cozy in the womb for the past 7 weeks. So the baby has mixed degrees of development. We know PT babies nurse differently (not as well, usually) so mom will have to guide and direct frequent feedings to keep weight gain going.

Mom came to our meeting last week for first time. Had baby 7 weeks early 2 days before she was planning to come to our meeting! Baby is doing great and has had breastmilk almost exclusively and breastfed as often as mom was at NICU, which was frequently all day, every day :-) Baby is up to ten lbs and doing great. Mom has a bit of an oversupply problem from pumping so well. Pat in SNJ
