I think Barb Otterson is right, and we should all remember (and remind moms) that grwoth charts are a reference of NORMAL babies, so that even a baby in the 5th percentile is normal! That being said, there is still the problem of comparing apples and oranges: we are measuring breastfed babies against charts developed from formula-fed babies. After careful examination of the FULL picture (weight, appetite, development, etc...) mothers should be reassured that growth charts are not absolute. After all, human beings come in a variety of sizes, with varying appetites and growth rates... I think very often too much emphasis is put on growth charts. Just my very humble opinion...
