Dear Friends:

I just wanted to let you know that we found out over the weekend that the
Board at the Elizabeth Seton Childbearing Center decided to close the
center due to the dramatic increase in insurance costs. It is the only
freestanding childbearing center in Manhattan. It won't affect the
lactation services that my colleague and I provide because we are semi-
independent. We only need to find a new location for our classes and
support groups, but it is such a huge loss for women in Manhattan. We see
clients who have delivered all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, and the
difference in how women describe their childbearing experiences at
Elizabeth Seton is amazing. I've heard about this center for years and it
feels terrible to know that a women-centered organization will be closing.
I also feel for all the midwives at the center and the childbirth
educators. I don't know all the details of how and when the center will
close, but I do know they will keep it open at least through the end of
September.
