Hi Colleen. I read your letter to IKEA on Lactnet. Obviously the IKEA
folks were out of line.

But I don't think you are going to have a great effect with a letter like
that. It's a rant, and that's how they'll see it. They aren't
preventing you from breastfeeding all day and all night, except for the 15
minutes or whatever that you were in their store, so your emotional
relationship with the child etc is pretty much beside the point. Or at
least don't you think THEY will see it that way?

If you just wanted to vent your feelings that letter is great; but if you
actually want to persuade the IKEA management to do something, it just isn't
a very effective approach, IMO.

If you can write them a one-to-two page letter, on the other hand, it might
actually get a response -- other than a form-letter-- from them.

If you decide to do that, the best way to do it is ONE paragraph listing,
TERSELY, exactly what happened -- no editorializing in this paragraph, just
the facts maam. E.g, "I said X, she said Y. I went here, she followed me
there, the manager said such and such."

Then ONE more paragraph explaining, SUCCINCTLY, why the stuff in the first
paragraph is bad (mentioning the CA statute, of course).

Then finally ONE TINY paragraph requesting a prompt response about how they
are going to fix this situation, and STATING -- without flourishes -- the
date you intend to complain to the state attorney general if you haven't
heard from them.

And the "sincerely, yours," and sign off! That's something they could
actually read, and that might get through their skulls.
