I too am interested in lactating diabetics, having been nursing an
IDDM woman on and off over the past five months who is nursing twins and who
have literally been forced to have ABM comps as one is very thin (well at
only third percentile or something like it) and the other is one kilo
lighter VERY thin. I have been trying to research case histories etc but so
far the only studies I have read talk about successful lactation up to three
months. She has done very well as the boys have been feeding very frequently
and have been ill as well with inguinal hernias and post op haematomas. It
was the most awful feeling trying to bottlefeed the boys, it felt like
assault and I believe that's what it was. I'm looking forward to a
forthcoming Australian lactation Consultants Association conference on
diabetes. Hope there are some pertinent comments to come, thanks, Ruth Leon
