Hi,
Since invited by Kathy D. to discuss this subject, I guess I will jump in.
Of course, many generalizations will have to be used here, as the
"subculture" Utah and Idaho is somewhat changing these days. However, as
to family size, Mormons do value children highly. We have large famlies
because we desire and want to bring children into our homes. It is a more
proactive decision than simply abstaining from the use of birth control.
It has also been my experience that breastfeeding has been a long standing
norm in the community. (Has that changed, are the breastfeeding rates
good?) When I was pregnant with my first baby 26 years ago, I was living in
Utah and there was simply no question that I would breastfeed. I moved to
California shortly before the birth, and my ob there was quite surprised at
my rather naive answer to the question "Are you going to breastfeed?" Was
there any other way?? As far as the family sizes of 10,12 and 14, yes they
do exist. But I would be surprised if the women actually curtailed
breastfeeding to get pregnant again. I suspect that their fertility simply
returns, and they let nature take it's course, with the clear thought in
mind that they would like another baby.
Smiles,
Merilee Reeder
Mother of 6, which was considered somewhat large in California, but simply
amazes people in Switzerland!!
