I volunteer in a free breastfeeding clinic seeing mostly very poor
families. Their access to health care is limited and irregular because
even the small taxi fare to come is difficult for them. We need to lend
them hospital grade breast pumps for relactation and the like but
because we cannot ask them for a deposit it means that we have lost
several, at great expense for us because we fund these pumps ourselves,
and volunteer there too. 1. they can't afford to leave cash, 2. we can't
ask for their health card because it means they then cannot go to the
doctor, 3. we cannot ask for their passport because their sponsor's have
it, plus it is illegal, 4. the office is not secure enough to ask for
jewellery or something else of value, 5. they usually don't have phones
or give us a wrong number 6. if we threatened that if the pump wasn;t
returned by a specified time then we would come and collect it from
their house they would just then wait for us and we don't have the time
to be driving around picking them up, 7. they can't afford to come to
the clinic weekly so we can keep an eye on them.

Do any of you have experience or any great ideas to solve this problem?
We are thinking about buying some smaller hand pumps because we can get
more for our money but being even smaller we worry that they will be
left forgotten at home also. Our other dilemma is mums returning to work
after 45 days and wanting a pump but can't afford to buy one. Again we
never see the pump again. They can all get free AIM from the government
so it isn't as if they would have to buy the stuff anyway so therefore
we can ask them to pay off the pump (and we know an instalment plan
wouldn't work either because they just would not come). We are really
stuck on this. We acknowledge that there are dishonest people out there
but most we feel just never get around to returning the pumps and we
have incorrect or no contact details for them. We need a system that is
workable and not too taxing on us.we just can't call them everyday or
collect the pumps ourselves. I apologise for this lengthy post but we
really need some ideas. As this is not a mainstream issue please respond
privately. ANY IDEAS WELCOME.
