Karen Page,

Cup feeding has been my interest for the past several years. I did a survey
on the majority of hospitals and alternative feeding metheds. I have many
hospital names that are presently cup feeding and that have policies and
procedures for cup feeding. The hospitals include normal newborn and NICU.
The hospitals are using anything from the medine cups (sharp edges), to the
ILCA cup feeder with a smooth ridge, to an older infant that takes in more
-Dixie cup, shot glass (clear so you can see what the infant takes). Others
are using tuperware cups, McDonalds ketchup containers, etc. What is
important is that the infant is in control. The NICU infant "laps up" the
milk (30-32 wks) and can control the swallow breathing and that the normal
newborn might suck up the milk. We need to encourage the moms that it takes
time to feed the babies this way and that it is only temporary until they are
able to get their baby onto the breast. (always offering the breast at
feedings first) Sandra Lang did an exellant presentation on cup feeding at
ILCA and you can order her VIDEO that demonstrates cup feeding -V532
