For those of you who remember, I posted approx 1 mo ago about a 7 month
old (now 8 months) baby who had been breastfed up until then, with no
formula, and was also taking solids. Baby has had severe eczema and
tested positive for many food allergens. Is and was eating mostly infant
rice cereal (in the box) and vegetables, fruit. Mom herself had cut out
allergenic foods from her own maternal diet, and is eating mostly
chicken, rice, fruit and veg's. To get to the point - baby takes Neocate,
an elemental infant formula, now, eats baby rice, frt, and veg's, and mom
breastfeeds her at night 2 -3 times.
Mom has sorted out info (one MD had baby on 6 different meds for eczema,
most of them not approved for kids under 2 yrs, and now is down to only 1
topical med.)
I did suggest (several times) that she TRY switching to millet and lamb
as "staples" in her own and baby's diet for 1 week to SEE if that makes a
difference in eczema.
I should mention also that while in my office, the baby, who is very
good-natured and pleasant, scratched her face till it was raw and bloody.
Mom says at night, the baby has trouble sleeping and is generally
uncomfortable.
I gave her the book everyone on Lactnet recommended: "Baby Matters: What
Your Dr May Not Tell You " and told her to keep it.
I also suggested that (perhaps when things "settle down" a little, she go
ahead an make ONE MORE APPOINTMENT (!) with an allergist- wholistic-pedi
dr who is highly recommended in our area.
Right now she sees Head of Dermatology Dr at Childrens' Hospital in
Boston.
Mom is super-conscientious, and is getting to the point (I think) where
she is getting lots of conflicting advice from drs and friends alike. My
role at this point is to be a resource and be available if she needs me.
Baby is doing better than she was - and - wholistically speaking - it
seems as though it is probably healthier for the baby to have skin
problems related to allergies than emotional or gi problems. (In
Homeopathy, they always say that the closer the symptoms are "to the
surface, meaning outside part of the body", usually the better chances
for a full return to good health for the child/person.)
Thank you to everyone for all your posts.
Sincerely,
Elaine Mazgelis, RD, IBCLC
