I just got a new version of this compound.  In the past mothers have called
it "genetian violet" (very common), "gentle violet" (not always that gentle,
actually), "gentile violet" (though many Jews do use it), "genital violet"
(hmm!).  Today I got a mother calling it "gentien violent" (well, not always
gentle, but not violent either).
