Subject: Hepatitis C and breastfeeding

Dear Lactnet Friends:

There are several disease where fragments of the virus are found in milk,
but there has been no transmission of disease by breastfeeding. Hepatitis C
is one of those.

Neither Hep A, B, or C are contraindications to breastfeeding.

Hi Mary,  I would have a talk with Hep C + mother about paying attention to optimal latch to the areola to avoid nipple damage/cracking/bleeding.  And to avoid breastfeeding for 24-48 hours in the case of nipple bleeding. Otherwise ~ Go ahead and breastfeed!!Susan in Minnesota rn ibclc
