Hi there ...Elyse explained that in her hospital, discharge coolers were
used to assist mothers with transport of EBM.

----------------------

I just read the post about the formula discharge packs. I work in as an NICU
LC and we give all our moms a "Ross" cooler bag to transport their EBM in.
These bags are provided to our hospital at no cost to us.

Our hospital will probably never be baby friendly, due to our # of deliveries
(l2,000+/year) but I feel like anything we can do to help a mom continue
pumping,
in an already stressful situation, is helpful, not a deterrant.
--------------------------

I would like to respectfully suggest that anytime a formula company "gives"
a product for "free" to new mothers, that there it isn't "free." at all.
The price that might be "paid" is a subtle endorsement by the hospital of
artificial baby milk, and this may in turn, be why people feel that formula
is ok. It is the linkage of hospital's good name, reputation for endorsing
health, etc. to the formula company that is the goal...and I do not think
that the problem is so much that free formula stuff is a deterrent to
breastfeeding so much, as it is that the message of safeness and
acceptability of formula is a * dangerous * and inaccurate (TO SAY THE
LEAST!) message to send new moms...and all just by subtle association. It
is the marketing machinery
of the ABM companies at work to promote their products once again. Very sly.
Very smart. Dangerous is my opinion.

I did not read the other message closely about the IOWA study, but this is
just my thought on this one note. No flame intended. : ) Just my .02. Kathleen
