I would not recommend routine use of lanolin products for mothers. I
teach them the wonderful healing power of their own milk to help with
soreness and healing. This is a wonderful, confidence-building concept
to teach mothers. It is always available, anytime, any place. I worry
about sensitivity to lanolin or masking yeast and allowing it to take
hold under the coating of lanolin. I find some mothers like to use
lanolin, particularly in the winter months, but I teach them about
letting their own milk dry on the area first, then apply lanolin after
it is dry.

As a side note, I had a little reason to smile this week. My daughter,
a pharmacist, has a 3 year old who was BF, experiencing his first ear
infection. It was late on Sunday and they didn't want to go to the
urgent care center their ped. uses. I suggested a little breastmilk in
his ear and she caught on to the idea. She has a friend with an over
abundance of milk who has been screened by a milk bank that accepts her
donations. She got an ounces of fresh breastmilk from her, used a few
drops in his ear that night. The next morning he was seen by the ped
and, indeed, has an ear infection. He wrote a Rx for amoxicillin, but
his symptoms abated, and they have not had to fill the Rx. His fever
and pain are relieved and decongestants are taking care of the rest of
his misery.

Mothers should know how wonderful their milk is for nourishment AND
healing!
