Debbie:
In response to your post - I quite agree. I have been in the field of
lactation for 9 years, and 5 years ago when I decided to become an LC, I
began my intensive studies. I was advised by a mentor in the field to get
atleast my LPN to "backup" my clinical background for private practice.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I did it. But now I wish I had just gotten
the RN, because nobody wants to hire less than an RN even if they're an
IBCLC! It's so frustrating! And in nursing school, not only did I get
the same "one" page on lactation, it was full of misinformation! In fact,
I asked my OB instructor if I could present on lactation to correct some
of that misinfo! So after the LPN let-down, I remembered why I went to
nursing school in the first place - to have my own private practice!
That's what I've done, and I'm thrilled!
Sorry for the ranting, but going through nursing school w/3 small kids and
finding out it's considered worthless by postpartum units is painful -
