i have no experience with this situation, but i have an idea of what could
be tried. i would imagine the mother would have a fairly easy time of
positioning. it would be the attachement that she would not be sure of and
also evaluating whether or not the baby is feeding effectively. as all
mothers worry about 'is the baby getting enough?'
so have the father work with the mom on every feeding for first few days.
and have the LC with them for many early feedings and both give feedback to
her on what the baby is doing. have the mother tune in and describe what her
sensations and evaluations are. for example, the LC can say the baby has a
deep latch and is doing 'fluttery' sucks now. now the baby is taking long
slow sucks. the baby is slowing down and relaxing his fists. you get the
idea. the mother may be able to tell what babe is doing on her own. at some
point see if the mother can say what is happening and you confirm it. i
would think this mom needs very close guidance til her milk comes in and
thru the early full phase. i find many mothers have trouble latching during
'engorgement' even when they had been doing well before. after that the baby
should be pretty good on his own and the mother should be able to feel pre
and post feed breast changes.
does this sound useful and workable? best wishes to all.
