Barbara said,

<< The Dad's attorney spent a very long time questioning me on why I am not
licensed by the state of NC to be a IBCLC. I kept explaining that this was a
certification process with a recertificatioon every 5 yrs and he kept asking
why ILCA had not applied for state licensing. >>

Oh Barbara, how awful to go through. I remember my one and only sojourn into
the hallowed halls of "justice" -- I was there defending cabbage. Honestly,
I may be the only person in history that has defended a vegetable in court.
I was TERRIFIED!!!

First of all, the attorney has it wrong. ILCA is our professional
organization, not the certifying body. (Doncha love it when the attorney is
wrong? They are so pompous about it -- only the attorneys that are AGAINST
us, mind you -- not the ones on our side). Secondly, we are certified
INTERNATIONALLY, not MERELY in the US, or in NC. There is no need for a
state certification when ours is recognized around the world. Thirdly, the
trend is moving away from licensure and towards certification in general.
However, that is a point that is still up for discussion.

I agree -- the guy was just trying to disarm you. You have all the "good
stuff" in your corner. Hang in there, friend!! Let us know what happens.

Jan Barger, RN, MA, IBCLC -- who hopes she NEVER has to go to court again,
not for cabbage, not for carrots, not for nuthin!
