Had occasion to help mom this week with 2 month old. She can't get the baby
off the shield. Reinforces my bias against them I am afraid. Fortunately
her milk supply seems more than adequate as baby is gaining well. She is
frustrated and fed up with the shield tho and lacking in confidence. Baby
was given shield for sore nipples I believe. Was also supplemented with
formula in hospital because of jaundice (arrggh!).However, the night that I
saw her she ws able to get the baby to latch on without the shield but he
kept popping on & off, & she felt he was just playing - told her that was
okay, give him time to get used to the taste & the feel. I was just so
pleased that the baby wasn't screaming or refusing (like my own did when
nipple confused). Then when the letdown came he obviously had a lot of
trouble handling it and came off when he finished, not really fussing but
squirmy. See, she said, this is what he does, this is when I put on the
shield.Anyways, I won't go into more detail - suffice to say I think she
feels confident enough now to try a few things and hopefully she will get
back to breastfeeding the way nature intended. It was just so sad and
frustrating to watch her nursing from across the room, at the beginning of
the evening, struggling with the shield, using the transition hold (another
pet peeve of mine) which it turned out was giving her back strain....enough
venting.
