A mother in my practice successfully relactated after having HELLP.  She
started attempting to relactate at one month postpartum (it took her that long
to be out of danger medically).  She used a supplemental nursing system at the
breast and pumped her breasts after bf to increase stimulation.  She used a
double kit with a hospital grade pump.  It took her about 2 weeks to go from
complete abm feeding to exclusive bf.  (She had exclusively bf her older
child, and continued bf into toddlerhood.)  She had no milk at all when we
started working together.  I think having the baby at breast is the most
important factor in relactation.  Will her baby accept feedings at breast?
        Another client was unable to bf her baby until he had a frenuloplasty
at 2.5 mos of age.  Her milk supply had dwindled from the delay, but a
frenotomy would not have been enough for this baby's very restrictive
frenulum.  It only took her 3 weeks to get her supply up to meet his needs
once he was able to take the breast.  I think it is amazing what women can do.
