Katherine says, "when there's clear evidence though, that something is
risky, I make choices make things as safe as they can be. for me,
it's not about a scare tactic. it's about sound evidence, logic and
choices."

Dear All,
There is definitely something to be said for clear evidence. It has
changed behavior in many people as Katherine notes. However, there is
also something to be said for logic and intuition as well. All of my
children were in car seats and booster seats until they outgrew them
because I could see the danger to them if they were not. That was way
before the research was in and the warnings and laws came out. I did
not smoke (anything!) or drink even, because I didn't want anything to
control me, before we had the evidence about addictions and possible
harm. I did not use heavy blankets when I co-slept with my babies
because I *knew* it could be a hazard to them. And so on and so forth.
We don't all have to have evidence for every last thing, to make a
reasonable observation that something is or is not good for us. I have
talked about personality differences a few times on this list and I
think this is an example of it. Whereas Katherine seems to need to see
evidence (nothing wrong with that), I tend more to do what *makes sense*
to me. I always talk about what is logical and reasonable. I used to
say that I joined La Leche League because they believed what I believed,
not the other way around. Same for the church I attend. By this logic
then, some people *do* need scare tactics. After all, what are Smokey
the Bear and the Crash Test Dummies anyway? They did not sing the
praises of not lighting fires in a dry forest or wearing seat belts.
They showed the hazards of the undesirable behavior. That is what the
Ad Campaign was originally premised upon as I recall (has it really been
almost a year since we first heard of it?!) So. Different strokes for
different folks, I say. We are all different and motivated by different
things.

BTW, Katherine, did you really mean to say, "I really really don't like
nursing."?
