Leslie: Given that this mom is producing oxytocin and prolactin, I'd give
her a resounding yes that she can bf. I'd also caution her that glucose
water can be very dangerous in terms of short circuiting baby's need to
nurse frequently. It serves no real purpose and has real dangers. I also
suspect that this mom's confidence level is at rock bottom, so she needss
lots of support and to be linked up to a local LLL group (yours?) that
"normalizes" bf. Of course she needs to be educated on wet/stooled
diapers, frequency of nursing, and signs of dehydration, but we should do
this will every parent. Even if only for a placebo effect (I think there's
more to it than that though), the introduction of some herbs might be
helpful. The standard use of fenugreek would do, but I think she might
benefit from seeing a licensed naturopathic doctor (ND) who is knowledgable
about pituitary glandular support supplements. If she is open to this
idea, but can't find one, email me back privately. I'm not an
endocrinologist, but I can put you in touch with others who've been through
this. I hope this helps.
