to ask permission before I touch a breast, something I wasn't doing before"

Yesterday, I saw a mom in her home, I asked her the routine permission to touch mom and baby question and she stopped, looked up at me and said, "you are the first person who has ever asked me that". This is a second time mom--first baby was in NICU, second is one week old. She saw an LC in the hospital and one with her first baby and of sourse all the nurses and doctors. How is it that this is not common sense, never mind protocol? BTW, with a background as an LLL Leader, I have always felt comfortable with touching when needed, mostly touching mom's hands as a guide, but sometimes I have become more involved when it seems more hands are needed just to get a baby to experience a latch. But, I am never happy to leave a mom before she can do it w/o me, and I sure don't want her to say "he only latches on when you are here".
