Friends,
I need your help. Three to five years ago the staff at the Texas
Department of Health wrote several pieces of literature targeting teen
moms, dads, and expectant parents. Among the advantages of
breastfeeding, we included the statement that "breastfed babies cry less
often." This was based on literature that was documented at the time,
but was not include in the written material.

This statement has now been challenged, and unless we can remember where
we found it, we must remove it from our materials.

Most of the information we have come up with is extrapolated from the
research, and I am sure we had some direct references.

The Breastfeeding Answer Book notes the research by Hunziker that babies
held 3+ hours per day cry up to 45% less. Lauwers' book and Lawrence's
book discuss crying babies in general.

I have suggested we review our literature from Gene Cranston Anderson.
The other references we can suggest are related to reduced ear
infections, gastrointestinal illness and repiratory infections. We have
a databank of articles with over 3,000 references, but we don't have a
file titled "Crying."

I am asking for suggestions that will lead us to the source of our
original statement. These publications were written around the same
time that Best Start developed a PSA with two babies in a crib - one
crying, one calm - and the words "Guess which baby is breastfed." Of
course, the breastfed baby was the calm one. I have suggested we call
Best Start for their references.

I also made the plea that we keep a file of the references we use when
writing our material!

Thanks for your help.
