The problem is getting progressively worse to the point of both being in
tears during feedings today. The baby is gaining weight and is content
between feedings but is fussy during feedings. >>

I would suggest going longer on one side than 4-6 hours. I had this problem
with my daughter. At that time, no one seemed to know much about OAMER, so
the solutioins were trial and error and long in coming. B/c I wore her in a
sling almost all of the time, I ended up nursing upright on the same side for
many, many feedings. Then, I would take her out of the sling, and catch up on
the other side. I did this really for convenience--had no idea that it would
help with the MER, but it did. The other things that helped (also discovered
by accident) were nursing the baby all night feedings across my chest (she
slept there for 18 mos!) and taking a calc/mag supplement. I personally
believe this was the most important thing I did. BTW, some people feel
consuming large amounts of cow milk might be a factor, but I am a vegan, so I
cannot speak personally on that.
