What ever happened to trusting the mother? SOMETHING is bothering this
mom, even if she can't pinpoint it completely.

I just recently had this brought home in a very personal way.
My youngest daughter, 4.5 yrs, was born with a hole in her heart (ASD)
which we always knew would have to be corrected someday. We have been
waiting till she's a bit bigger because new procedures are available
which are far less invasive (like angioplasty as opposed to bypass
surgery) She has been completely stable since birth. In the last month
or so, I began getting uneasy about her. Her color didn't seem quite
right, she seemed less energetic, etc.
A trip to the pedi, who did not believe anything was amiss, but
recommended I follow up with the cardiologist, just to "cover all the
bases" The cardiologist and I spoke on the phone, he assured me that it
wasn't her heart, but almost certainly some mild reactive airway disease
that was causing her slight symptoms. He scheduled her for a pulmonary
function test, and a cardiac stress test "just to cover all the bases".
We are now scheduled for open heart surgery on 5/10.

Mothers just KNOW sometimes, and we need to address this mom's concern,
not explain why she's mistaken without a complete evaluation.

Slightly off the subject, but yesterday I spoke to a mom I have worked
with in the past. She went to her OB because of having some serious
depression problems (baby is 5 months) Her doctor dismissed her concerns
saying "there's nothing we can do anyway, since she *still* wants to
breastfeed. End of discussion.

How arrogant of any health related professional to disregard the
concerns of their patients. (I include myself in this, I'm sure I've
been guilty at some time as well)
