Hello all,
Any light to shed on this. Mom with second baby. Seen at 3 weeks by me, checked latch, corrected all possible angles. severe bilateral bleeding fissures on nipples. Moderate pain with first baby who was nursed for a year. But pain was bearable with no visable sores. Mom referred to another MD, LC for thrush which was treated and seemed to abate. Baby now 11 weeks, mom pumping each side for a few days to give nipples a rest and chance to heal, which they do, then when re-latching nipples get traumatised again. Oral check performed by both clinics, positioning addressed, does have trouble keeping baby close because baby is used to being further away from breast so, at 11 weeks objects to being tucked in close. Nipple shields did not help alleviate trauma, but I suggested to her to nurse from one side, pump from the other (which does not cause trauma and allows healing) and only then try shield to see if it prevents further and recurring trauma. then if it works to do same with other side.
She insists that the latch is good, position good, but with all that, she should not still experience such pain and bleeding nipples. Any other ideas or experiences you might add?

thanks, with permission from mom of course. (why do we write that? Is it necessary, if names and specifics are not submitted?)
ellen shein, tel aviv
