Subject: new study on SIDS and breastfeeding

Wow! Just caught the tail end of a CNN headline news flash that
said a new
study just published (didn't catch where) found that 55% of SIDS
deaths
could have been prevented by BREASTFEEDING. In other words, to
Wiesiingerize that, 55% of SIDS deaths can be attributed to
formula-feeding.
Another 27% can be attributed to second-hand smoke. This study
found no
difference in SIDS deaths based on sleeping position (front or
back). Very
interesting . . . .

If someone can find the original study, please post the reference.

This appeared in our local paper also. The point made in that
article was that we have probably prevented most of the SIDS deaths
related to sleeping position with the very successful "Back to
Sleep" program. Now the "experts" are looking to what other causes
are leading to SIDS deaths even when babies lie on their backs. I
remember years ago when sleeping position was first implicated,
studies reportedly also identified "smoking in the household" and
"not being breastfed" as other factors increasing the risk. It
always seemed interesting to me that sleeping position had no
commerical interest (except for the subsequent sales of those little
triangle pillows to keep a baby in the position in which you lay
them down). On the other hand, there was a lot of commercial
interest in keeping the other 2 causes out of the public eye.
Coincidence? We'll never know for sure.
I will look back through our newspapers and see if I can find a
reference. If I do, I'll post it.
