Lois Warrington (welcome, Lois) posted requesting info re: mother
attempting 2nd lactation after tx with radiation for Hodgkins 12 yrs ago. I
have not had personal exper. with this type cancer specifically, but the
literature on lactation after radiation therapy for breast cancer describes
reduced or destroyed lactation function when breasts have been exposed to
radiation. However, more glandular tissue is grown with each subsequent
preg. and she may have more milk this time than last. That is a phenomenon I
have personally observed. Infant's growth should be carefully monitored as
there is a good chance that she won't have full production capacity. I
would certainly encourage her to try, be supportive of all efforts and
stress benefits of even partial bfg. Certainly really excellent post-partum
management of lactation -- esp. during lactogenesis II will be critical.
