<<i'm not sure why the post i am responding to was changed to say 'breech
babies and breastfeeding' when it never went on to join the two subjects tho
the implication was that we should ...so i will dutifully oblige by
reporting that breech babies seem to breastfeed just as beautifully as head
down babies ! :-)

Thanks for writing and sharing your experience, Jacqui. I agree with the
other poster who said that this subject is best left off a lactation list
where an in depth conversation on obstetric techniques can't be done
thoroughly. However, I, too, was dismayed by the content that then ensued
which really needed to be addressed but the call was made to discontinue the
subject. Not really fair for someone to request that a discussion end and
then go on and on with their "last word". I recently had a client who had a
3 yr old (vaginal birth) and 14 mo old triplets (c-section). Her last
(singleton) baby was breech and all that the hospital could offer was a
repeat cesarean. These were not super wealthy parents. How could she
possibly care for all her young children if she needed to recover from major
abdominal surgery? She gave birth vaginally at home to the breech baby.
She knew there were risks but there are also serious risks from surgery.
There are social factors that come into birth that have to be considered,
too.

With re to breech and br feeding, the breech baby's neck is not as strong as
that of a vertex baby so you get that floppy head, also, with a frank
breech, those little feet want to stay up by the face so that's an
interesting package to get on the breast. I've only had br feeding problems
with one breech baby but that was because the mother had very flat, soft
nipples and no nearby sexual partner to coax them out. Took some
persistence with breast shells but eventually worked out fine.
