Dear Friends:
Thank you Cathy Fetherston, for a lovely explanation of the ultrasound
research.
Now I have a question. When I teach hand expression, I have the mother
find and palpate the area that, for want of a better term, I call the
sinuses. I can palpate that area; the mother can feel a place that is
"different" in texture. That's where her fingers go.
I have seen in myself, an area that looked like a doughnut, raised up
around my nipple (but a few mm away from the base of the nipple) when I was
very very full.
The new Breastfeeding Answer Book has a drawing from Medela AG, showing
a torturous maze of ducts (similar to the capillaries at the back of the eye)
which makes sense as similar designs repeat in nature. There are no sinuses.
So what are these areas that can be felt and seen?
     Warmly,
