Case: When mother pumps, her milk is white. After refrigeration, splotches of bright hot pink colors appear on the bottle, nipple and through the milk. (photographs of the milk and bottles were shown by the mother to the counselor). Mother has had a very hard time getting anyone to take her seriously. Most health providers have assumed the milk was tinged with blood. However, the color is certainly not the color of blood!
The internet has a link (Mystery Diagnosis: Pink Breast Milk - on the HowStuffWorks site) which features a case with similar colored milk. In that story the mother becomes deathly ill; and eventually "crowds" out the harmful bacteria (alleged to have cause the pink milk) by taking a probiotic supplement for herself and the baby. It took months for the harmful bacteria to be crowded out of their systems. The infant in that case had no symptoms of illness
The mother we are working with is hale and healthy, with no symptoms of illness. Her baby also appears healthy, four months old, totally breastfed until now. The mystery began when the baby had to have a cyst removed from her neck surgically during the first week of May. After that surgery, the baby was on antibiotics.
The pediatrician has sent a culture of this mother's milk to be analyzed, and has advised mother to switch to formula while they wait for the results. Mother hopes to know in a few days whether she can resume breastfeeding the baby. In the meantime, she is pumping with a hospital grade pump to protect her supply.
