Hi Dianne, when I had my 1st the hospital staff seemed more interested in
mothers expressing and obtaining milk for the prem nurseries and so we were
told how to express and obviously I learnt very efficiently as it took
another Dr to tell me to slow down because of the amount I was producing.

Knowing more now, I think the kick start to production helped the effective
breastfeeding although for the 1st I was given a lot of incorrect advice by
health professionals who undermined breastfeeding by A) feeling my breast to
gauge fullness, and B) telling me my son wasn't gaining enough when at about
16 weeks he stopped gaing the 8-12 ounces per week he had been gaining in
the early weeks and advised me to both add other foods to his diet and to
give formula comps.

The other ways of feeding, like lying down, out and about, in front of
others, took me a while to "get" as I only saw a few babies breastfed at
that stage and none after 6 months. With the 2nd I eased up on all the
rules and actually enjoyed the boys a lot more and went on to feed for over
12 months (a massive achievement, I thought)

Number 3 and 4 were much more relaxed but of course they are in their 20ies
and havent reached the age group of the oldest 2

Hope it helps,
Julie Weller
