Dear Friends:

Rodriguez et al. J Perinatology 2008; 29:1-7 is the article about using
newborn milk for mouth care.

As for transitioning premature infants to breastfeeding, here is a model
from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, as described in this article (Diane
Spatz PhD J Peri Neonat Nurs 2004; 18(4):385)

 1. Start mother pumping by 6 hours after delivery

2. Mouth care with colostrum
– A premie-sized q-tip dipped in colostrum
– Paint inside of cheeks and lips once a shift

3. Skin to skin care

4. Non-nutritive sucking

5. Breastfeeding

warmly,
