Thank you for all the emails supporting me and the family I am working with.
The baby is doing amazing well, has gained 4 oz but the MD has said she can't
go home until she gains a pound, and then has to go home with a NG tube and a
visiting nurse. So far she has only had breastmilk but it is a constant
battle. Tonight I am ready to just give up and walk away. A nurse went in the
room today after I left from visiting the baby and mom while on my lunch
hour, and told the mom that " she was sure I meant well but I just didn't
know about these special babies and the family needs to just concentrate on
what the doctors and nurses are telling them because they are professionals.
And what type of education do I have anyway?".
The cardiac nurse wanted to meet me today and was in the hall waiting for me
when I left. She tried to get into it with me about the cows milk--that the
diabetes educator was sitting right there and could tell me there is no
relationship between cows milk and diabetes. ( this is one of the reasons the
family doesn't want to supplement with fortifier). I had also talked with the
mother about taking Fenugreek and the cardiac nurse told the mother NOT to
take it ( the mom had left it sitting on the table). This nurse had obtained
a prescription and bottle of Reglan for the mother with instructions to take
for 30 days (how a pediatric cardiac nurse gets reglan for the mom is a
mystery). The mother has reasons not to take Reglan which she and I have
discussed but the mom wasn't asked for her medical history or volunteered it.
I would not be surprised if they don't order me out when I go to visit
tomorrow.
